Tea Time: Black Jack Tea With Red Plum Jam Mini Pies

It’s the Christmas season and this means families getting together to spend some quality time. Spending quality time involves food, in fact, a lot of food. Speaking of food, ever since I was little(r), I always dreamed of having a tea party. Yes a tea party complete with fancy china and all sorts of sweets that I made for everyone attending. I think I am close to achieving  this dream now that I know how easy it is to make these pies.

I am sure most of you know what black jack is. A common weed  that has awns which get  stuck to your clothes if you happen to be near a bush of some sort. As irritating as this plant can be, it also has benefits like how it makes a super flavorful tea.  Seriously, my list of teas(is this a word?) is growing. All you  have to do is get some black jack leaves with their flowers too(preferably the tender ones), wash them and  boil them in enough water.  After it has boiled, strain out the awn, leaf and flower particles, add sugar and serve. It’s that simple really. So in honor of the holiday season, I thought this super easy black jack tea would really go well with these jam pies. Since the teas is easy to make, I am sharing the pie recipe below

What you will need:
Zesta Red Plum Jam
2C. Baking flour
½ C. Margarine (blue band)/ Butter
1/2 C. Cold water
1Tbsp. Sugar
½ Tsp. Salt

Method
Sift flour in a bowl. Add salt and sugar. Mix well.
Add margarine and using your hands mix it in the flour until the mixture becomes coarse.
Next add the water, a tablespoon at a time, while mixing. Keep adding little water until a firm dough is formed. It should not be very wet and should not stick to your hands so much (you may need more or less water).
After you have formed a firm dough, put it back in the bowl and keep it refrigerated for 15 minutes.
After 15 minutes, remove from the refrigerator and, on a floured surface, cut the dough into two equal parts.
Using a floured rolling pin or a glass bottle, roll the dough out till it is thin enough. Using a circular cookie cutter or glass, cut out as many circles as possible. The size of the cutter determines the size of the pies. If you want them large, use a larger cutter and vice versa. Using a rolling-pin, roll out the scraps and continue cutting out circles until the dough is over.
Spoon ½teaspoon of the Zesta red plum jam into the center of half of the pie circles. Make sure to leave enough of a border around the filling to seal them shut. Do not overfill!
Brush around the edges of the dough with a finger dipped in a whisked egg. This will be the “glue”.
Place a second dough circle on top each filled circle then use a fork to press the edges together.
Cut a hole on the top of each pie with a sharp knife and place on prepared sheet pan.
Refrigerate for 15 minutes.
Bake the pies for 15 minutes, or until they’re golden brown. Enjoy!
Makes 25+

I realize the method is lengthy but it’s just me trying to break down the whole process which is easy. So no worries. While making the tea, I grabbed the camera and went out in the back yard to shoot some weeds A.K.A Black Jack. That’s how easy it is to find black jack.

Happy Holidays

🙂

Hello lovely people. It is April(duh!) and  its raining here like crazy! This month’s LOL guest is Taylor of Simple Grounds. She is an amazing person whose love for Jesus Christ is absolutely inspiring. I also love the fact that she is a realistic person.I am completely honored to have her here to share  her view of living out loud.

lol for blog

Hello, lovely readers! I’m Taylor, the writer over at Simple Grounds. I’m a young lady living, working, and experiencing life in Houston, Texas. When I’m not outside or spending time with my incredible boyfriend, I am a hostess and a photographer, as well as a full-time student. I am pursuing my English degree, in hopes to become an English teacher. Got to love grammar, right? I also just recently started an online, vintage shop called Ruth Vintage. You could say I’m a pretty busy lady. I am a simple lady who loves the outdoors, I drink coffee like it’s water, and I love to create, write, and be silly.

When Sophia asked me to share how I live out loud, the first thing that came to my mind was my reckless abandon for my faith. I have never thought about how I am ‘living out loud,’ but I believe my faith is the first thing I talk about and the last thing I want you to remember. As I mentioned, I am constantly doing things. Between essays, vintage clothing, photos, and a job, I am always moving. My one goal is that I am continuously representing my faith, being an active figure for the Gospel, and always encouraging and loving in the process. Without that balance in a chaotic, broken life, I would be meaningless. I would be yet another face to many projects and jobs. Without that abandon to my faith, my dreams would be so selfish and fickle. When I graduated high school and began pursuing my passions and callings, I realized that anything, and I mean anything, not done in love is worthless. Any job, any goal, any creative art is completely worthless without a purpose. And to me, purpose is the essence of living out loud. When you read my blog or visit me at work, I hope my presence yells “purpose.” I hope, in humility, I can be a living example of a life lived for purpose. My biggest role model and image of living this life is Jesus himself. No other model can represent the very essence of purpose like Him. Love God, love others, and be kingdom-minded. In everything I do, this is the goal. With that in mind, this life of living out loud follows. Being courageous, taking risks, having joy and love, it all comes from that childlike faith in loving the Lord.

If you are seeking this, this essence in your life, I can say that nothing greater will come than knowing your Creator. After four years, it has changed my life and I dare not look back.

Have purpose and live with abandon.

Doing What We Love(V-day Story)

snapshot-148I didn’t know what to name this post ha!

Lately I have been so stressed out…in a good kind of way. (I realize its time I talked about the valentines project I mentioned in the post before.

It all started last year. We came up with a crazy idea of hosting a dinner party for valentines because nothing fun really ever happens around here. So my lil sis was like “hey we could host a party!” and I was like “yeah. Where exactly?” and she was like “I dunno.” We realized it was way too huge a project to carry on with limited funds! And so we thought and thought and thought…and thought till a greater idea came up!

We would make valentine packages for clients and let them pre-order the packages so we can deliver them on the V-day. And so we started the journey with a lot of fear and ambitiousness we pressed on and on got multiple set backs, last-minute scares and heart attacks! But all in all it was a success, way beyond what we even imagined! We got supportive customers who urged us to “continue doing great things”.

This year, we did the same thing(again), but with a better, more well-researched, and professional approach. And the more challenges we got along the way  which were learning lessons for us. This time a lot of crafting was involved. We had to purchase craft paper,  and many other supplies to make paper bags, handmade cards and tags, hand painted and written business cards(the first batch ever!), wrapping the chocolate, the cupcakes and so much more. it was exhaustive but it was worth it in the end.

One thing we learnt through this all is that where your heart it, you will be willing to exert(physics anyone? ha!) energy no matter the strain! We realized we love crafting(duh!). It has been two months of crafting heaven for me because after the venture was over, we found ourselves restless!

There is truly joy in doing what you love  and an absolute bonus when you get paid for  the work done. Every piece of work will come out shining with that personal touch. With this discovery, we are determined to do more of what we love.

What have you discovered about yourself lately?

🙂
